“I’ll Pray for You”

By Mary Mortenson, Executive Director, PCA

“I’ll pray for you.”  I wonder how many times I’ve said that in the last few months.  How about you?  Does it mean anything? Sometimes I worry that my promise to pray for someone is as shallow as the thoughts and prayers so readily shared by elected officials in the face of unspeakable violence.  I suspect that you are like me in that there is the desire to mean what we say, and then to follow-up with actual prayer.

I know a man – his name is Kim - who is a member of a prison congregation and who years ago started praying for other prison congregations, especially those in women’s prisons.  It started when one time in speaking to his congregation I mentioned that they were soon to have little sisters in Christ in a brand new congregation in a women’s prison.   Before we parted company that night, he asked me when I would be seeing the women and then said, “Tell those girls I’m praying for them.”

Every time I have seen him since he has asked about that and other female congregations. This means that this conversation has taken place dozens of times.  A few months ago he explained that he has a soft spot in his heart for the women who are incarcerated because as he said, “I think it’s tougher for them.”

A short time ago, I was again in worship with Kim, and as usual he asked when I was next going to see “the girls.”  I was able to share that soon there will be a brand new female congregation in another state.  Kim leaned close and said, “You tell them that if things are bad, they will get better, and that this old guy is praying for them.”

I fought tears as I promised him I would pass along his love and care.  Kim is the real deal.  He means what he says and he will do what he says.  He is an example of the authenticity that a prison church shares with the church on the outside.  This man teaches me by word and example what it means to be a follower of Jesus.  Kim loves Jesus and because of that, he loves “the girls.”
