Isaac Bound

The binding of Isaac (as the story is known in Jewish tradition) remains a bizarre moment in Scripture.

Solidarity

Category: Thanks

Whether we are in prison justly or not, whether we support prison ministry or families of those incarcerated; whether we wear black or not, being in solidarity with others is a good thing. It is a Jesus thing and there are blessings built in to the connection the relationship, the support.

Sometimes it can seem like this work moves “slower than the Second Coming...” I have come to realize that the real beauty of John’s comment about being slower than the Second Coming is the sure and certain belief that the Second Coming will, indeed come, and it will be worth the wait. In fact for John and Ed - these two strong and faithful friends – the Second Coming has come as they have each walked into the arms of their Creator, leaving all who loved them in this life to continue to Holy Wait. Bless the memories of John O’Neal and Ed Nesselhuf.

Come and See!

Jun 25, 2017

Category: Invitation

And so we invite you to come into prison, not with the threat of punishment, but with the promise that Jesus will come crashing into your life. The people you meet will come crashing into the way you read the Bible. Before your eyes, their stories will become the stories of God’s people in exile, and the story of your path home.

It's the time of year in which we celebrate our parents. We've already celebrated Mothers Day and now it's time for Fathers Day. God's Word gives us these instructions within the ten commandments: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12) So shouldn't we follow these directives each and every day of the year? Nevertheless we've been given these holidays as an annual reminder to hold our parents in high regard, showing them love and appreciation.

Day by Day

Category: Spirit

Acts 2:44-47 describes how the first members of the church lived: "All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the good will of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved."

The Wind of the Spirit

Jun 03, 2017

Category: Spirit

In our work, I get to experience the Wind of the Spirit coaxing the Winds of Change everyday. Every day there is hope and excitement as we get one step closer to a new congregation or engage in a mutually beneficial ministry alliance or when good people of faith step forward in support of our work. Yes, there is a new wind blowing, and it is good – it is a blessing to God’s children, wherever accident of birth or consequence of choice has placed them. It’s validation that if ever there was a time, it is now for the church to step up and to be the church. The church can change the world. We can change the world. Jesus sent the Spirit to help us do just that.

God is Calling Us

May 21, 2017

Category: Calling

The devotional book God Calling has blessed many Christians and non-Christians since its publication in 1930. In 1985 my mother had just died an unexpected death at age 60 and, as I looked through her bookcase for anything that might have inspired her, I saw this worn copy on the shelf between the Bible and the AA “Big Book.” All three were shabby, with notes written in the margins - quite a treasure! It was November 12, 1985. The devotional for that date spoke about “The Voiceless Cry” that comes from anguished hearts and is heard above all the music of Heaven.

There are so many wounded adult children in this world who have never known the love from a mother that God intends for all children to feel. What a painful day it must be for so many incarcerated people who have never known what is was like to have a mother who loved and cared for them, who protected them from harm, who made them feel they were worthy of being loved. So many incarcerated people began their journey to prison at the hands of a mother who for whatever reason failed to be the mother their child needed them to be.
