The PCA model of prison ministry is about people in relationship, some incarcerated and some not, living into each season of life as children of God.

The PCA model of prison ministry works so well because of the fruitful interaction between inside prison congregations and outside local congregations.

Prison worship, where divisive differences are set aside, is a beautiful image of what God intends the church to be.

To do the right thing is often the hardest thing. This I have learned from people affected by incarceration. It’s so easy to go back to the old ways – to even romanticize those times. But it’s much harder to walk the new healthy path. This is where [Robert] Fulghum’s other advice rings true: “When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.”

Holy Ground

rison ministry is hard work – not for the immature or the fainthearted. Prison pastors must find a balance in the tension of obeying prison rules while caring for their congregants, and in being respectful of other religious programming while still being true and clear about their own theological understanding. It is critical that pastors engage in deliberate self-care, so that they can navigate within these unique tensions.

God Wants You To

Aug 20, 2017

Category: Invitation

I work with guys who recognize they need to change, recognize their efforts to change in the past have been unsuccessful, and recognize their need for God's help. Prison congregations serve as God's hands and lips. Along with over 40 volunteers from the "outside", we work to help guys see and live a brighter future...I invite you to join us or any of the other prison congregations in this fulfilling ministry. If there are none in your area, contact Executive Director Mary Mortensen of PCA to get one started in your area. I believe God wants you to.

Forgiven

Forgiven. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul wrote, “For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (NRSV, Colossians 1:13-14). Prison is dark and those within that darkness desperately seek the light of Christ. Sadly, many never find it. Sometimes though, all it takes is a hope-filled young person wearing a t-shirt to remind us that no matter whom we are or what we’ve done, we are forgiven.

Sound and Light

Aug 08, 2017

Category: Miracle

Those of us who worship inside are witness to the flickering lights born of enthusiasm and joy... these sights and sounds of prison congregational worship. The razor wire does not and cannot contain the light or the sound. Just like the cicadas’ song and the fireflies’ dance, the prison congregations’ witness spreads to the outside. Indeed, this song and accompanying dance of light is changing the church and through it, the world. May a loud and joyful song and a graceful dance play in your heart.

To experience worship inside a prison is to experience a plethora of paradoxes. We come to proclaim freedom through the grace of Christ; and we come to a place that exists for the purpose of confinement. Those who are often most in need of the meal are those restricted from receiving this sacramental gift. We come bearing gifts in a facility that for decades has focused on punitive deprivation rather than the restorative bestowal of love freely given.
