Together, we have journeyed to the foot of the cross and this Easter day we join with Christians throughout the world in the greatest celebration of our lives. Some of those Christians will celebrate the liberating grace of the resurrection while they are members of prison congregations. I believe that this congregational model of prison ministry is among the healthiest and most effective available today. It’s time – Let’s run together from that empty tomb and proclaim, “He is not here; he is risen!”

For me God was a lifeline to sanity in a crazy place. And God never let me down. I would get mail from strangers and friends when I needed it most. Another inmate would be friendlier than usual. And I learned to love those gals in there. I learned to laugh again in prison--no kidding.

Through PCA, we are in the church planting business. Like my hapless little crocus bulbs, sometimes things don’t go as planned, but no effort is ever wasted, and usually the result is more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. I am ever reminded that this is God’s work, and will be accomplished in God’s time, with God’s blessing. So we’ll keep planning and planting, all the while trying to listen to the urging of the Spirit, because in it all is God’s promise.

There is so much darkness, so much evil, so much fear in the world. In prison, the light of Jesus that shines is a profound contrast to the darkness. Men are often persecuted for their willingness to let Jesus’ light shine through them. God is shining through the darkness providing forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope to all who receive.

I suppose, like most individuals who have not served any time, when I first became involved it was with the attitude that I would be bringing something into the lives of the inmates and that somehow, my involvement would translate into a blessing for them. I do believe that is partially true, but what I know is true are the blessings that I have received through my involvement. The friendships and the vision of the Spirit working in the lives of both Brian and Paul and others have reignited the Spirit within me. I have received a far greater spiritual blessing than what I gave.

Prayer has the power to bring us together in mindful acceptance of our present moment together in the presence of God. We surrender to and confess how we both are of sinful nature. In the face of this confession, we are thankful for a saving grace that separates and detaches our persons as Children of God from our mistakes and transgressions. And we pray in hope for not only our futures but the needs and dreams of all we hold close.

I confess that for years, I really didn’t like Lent with all its somberness and minor chorded music. I would be impatient with the season, because I knew the rest of the story and just wanted to run with those other Marys to the empty tomb. Then a few years ago a wise friend reminded me that without the cross, there is no empty tomb. He taught me to be fully present in the season of Lent – to use the time for study and prayer and consideration.

Do you know what living stones are? It is the priesthood of all believers, whose faith is in Christ, the chief corner stone, and who then work together to spread the gospel. We are living stones. We are the body of Christ. Many people and many congregations have worked together to help build this community of faith.
